FORT HAMILTON, N.Y. – After almost 11 months of closure, the Fort Hamilton Post Office reopened, Nov. 23.

“This is a significant event,” said Col. Craig Martin, Fort Hamilton garrison commander. “The post office is a critical element of our community.”

The post office closed in early January for renovations in the building the office is located in. Since the closing, Fort Hamilton residents and other Fort Hamilton USPS customers had to cope completely without their former post office. Having previously had access to postal services throughout the week, in a local and convenient location, seeking an alternative post office was a constrain for many.

“The post office was invaluable to those who lived on Fort Hamilton,” said Tony Mercante, Government Housing Office Division Chief. “It was taken for granted, and we didn’t realize its value till after it was gone.”

Reopening during the holiday season will be a relief for many. During this past year, the Department of Defense has implemented restrictions and regulations to minimize the spread of the coronavirus, which has affected holiday travel for many military installations and individuals.

“Being apart from our family and friends, we want to stay in touch with them, especially now during the holiday period,” said Martin. “Thanks to this great postal team for coming down here from the USPS, and opening up the post office, we can take advantage of this.”

Fort Hamilton USPS customers now have the option to limit their travel outside the post to mail their items, keeping themselves and the community safe.

“We are glad to be opening back for Fort Hamilton,” said Eddie Banner, the Executive Postmaster of Brooklyn, N.Y. Banner is an eight-year Navy veteran with 25 years of dedicated Postal Service experience.

Banner continues, “Being former military, I know how important it is for the mail to come through, and we’re here to serve you as a great community.”

Renovations included: the construction and painting of several offices; repairing the main lobby; changing ventilation and doors to comply with physical security requirements. In response to COVID-19 recommended protocols, the Post Office has implemented social distancing and barrier protection to keep patrons safe.
