PACIFIC OCEAN – Logistics Specialist 1st Class Carlton Cross, a native of Americus, Georgia, is serving as leading petty officer in the supply department aboard Nimitz-class nuclear aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70). He is responsible for both allocating needed supplies throughout the ship and management of junior Sailors. In November, his hard work and dedication were recognized when he was selected as Vinson’s Senior Sailor of the Quarter (SSOQ), an award given to Sailors who go above and beyond the call of duty and demonstrate the highest standards of work ethic and military bearing.

“We deal with ship’s finances and use them to purchase needed materials throughout the ship,” said Cross.

Cross graduated from Americus High School in 2007. He attended college for a year, but then decided he wanted something more stable in his life. Cross began his Navy career in 2008.

“I was eating ramen noodles and playing football,” said Cross. “Then I ran into a recruiter, and he explained the Navy’s ladder of success and advancement. He showed me the break-down of advancement pay and money for tuition.”

Cross reported to Vinson in 2016 and has had a competitive work drive ever since. He credits his competive nature to his selection as SSOQ.

“I was the youngest of six siblings,” said Cross. “I had to be competitive. I wanted to be the first to school and the last to leave practice.”

Cross said he has enjoyed his time in the Navy and is always willing to take a leadership role to challenge himself while also helping his Sailors reach their potential. He attributes this personal drive to his mother and hometown.

“Americus is a blue collar and hard working town,” said Cross. “As I grew up there, my mother instilled a competitive spirit that I still have today and taught me to learn and grow from my losses.”

In his off time, Cross is working towards a Business Administration degree from Central Texas College. Cross’ journey in the Navy is far from over. He plans to keep his competitive edge and work toward each new rank.

“I plan on riding up the Navy ranks until the wheels fall off,” said Cross.
