Naval Base Kitsap was presented the Navy League Safety award for Fiscal Year 2020 by David Ellingson, president of the Bremerton-Olympic Peninsula Navy League council, December 3, 2020. The award is presented annually to recognize innovative safety efforts of individuals, units, or organizations that have reduced fatalities and mishaps among Department of the Navy Sailors, Marines and civilians. Typically handed out at Sea-Air-Space, the Navy League’s premier exposition held in April, the organization was forced to cancel in 2020 due to the Coronavirus Pandemic.
Through its vigilance to safety, Naval Base Kitsap has reduced the number of civilian mishaps in fiscal years 2018 to 2019 by 53%, civilian lost-work days decreased from 563 to 381 in that same timeframe. The base attributes these rapid decreases to an increase in the number of safety briefings, increased focus on operational risk management and wide promulgate of lessons learned from Mishap Review Boards to all base personnel. In 2019, Naval Base Kitsap received Voluntary Protection Program Star recognition from OSHA.
Capt. Richard Rhinehart, the commanding officer of NBK, expressed his pride in seeing the command receive the award. He also thanked the safety department for their hard work and dedication to supporting NBK’s mission.
“I would like to recognize all of NBK’s employees whose efforts led to achieving the Navy League Safety Award,” said Rhinehart. “Thank you for all that you do, this award is a testimony to NBK’s commitment to safety and mission readiness.”
Founded in 1902 with President Theodore Roosevelt’s support, the Navy League of the United States is a nonprofit civilian, educational and advocacy organization that supports America’s sea services: the Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard and U.S. flag Merchant Marine.
Naval Base Kitsap is the largest naval organization in Navy Region Northwest. Its mission is to serve as the host command for the U.S. Navy’s fleet throughout West Puget Sound, and provide base operating services, including support for surface ships, submarines and shore commands homeported at Bangor, Bremerton, Jackson Park, Keyport and Manchester. NBK will continue to be the best place to serve in the Navy.
