CAMP FOSTER, OKINAWA, Japan—Situated near the Base Installation Safety Office on Camp Foster, the Motor Transportation Branch houses the Green Line public transportation service for Marine Corps Base Camp Butler—to include Camp Foster, Camp Kinser, Camp Courtney, Camp Hansen and Camp Schwab—as well as Marine Corps Air Station Futenma.
“We provide service members, dependents, Status of Forces Agreement status civilians and contractors, and Department of Defense personnel safe and reliable ground transportation at no expense,” said Joe Vilailack, the MTB operations officer. Vilailack has been in charge of TGL operations for the past three years.
The Green Line services approximately 620 personnel daily across the 11 routes the buses utilize under the current COVID-19 environment, according to Vilailack.
“TGL provide commanders the flexibility for their Marines to utilize TGL services at no expense in order to attend medical appointments or for administrative requirements located at other camps,” said Vilailack. “The bus utilized the most is the intra-shuttle service aboard each installation, which provides enlisted personnel transportation between troop billets and work areas, and mess hall facilities during normal duty hours.”
In addition to Vilailack, TGL also employs 112 master labor contractors, all of which, are trained in being heavy vehicle drivers.
“I believe TGL plays an important role for Marine Corps bases in Okinawa,” said Takao Shiroma, a heavy vehicle driver for TGL. Shiroma has been driving for TGL for seven years. “It is a great honor for me to be able to work for The Green Line. I would like to continue to provide the best and safest transportation services in order to support the mission of the Motor Transportation Branch.”
Compared to other Marine Corps installations in the continental U.S., TGL is unique in that it is the only free, public transportation service provided to transport Marine Corps personnel across Okinawa.
