NORFOLK, VA. (NNS) – Rear Adm. Rick Cheeseman relieved Rear Adm. Brendan McLane as Commander, Carrier Strike Group (CSG) 10 during a change of command ceremony at the Pennsylvania House on Naval Station Norfolk, Dec. 14.

CCSG 10 commanded the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (IKE) Carrier Strike Group, including Carrier Air Wing 3, Destroyer Squadron 26, USS San Jacinto (CG 56), and USS Vella Gulf (CG 72), earlier this year on deployment. McLane took command of CCSG 10 onboard IKE while underway in the Arabian Sea, May 21, 2020.

When they returned to Norfolk on Aug. 9, IKE and San Jacinto set the record for most consecutive days underway with 206. They were soon outdone by a fellow ship in their Strike Group, USS Stout (DDG 55), however, as she was underway for 215 consecutive days when she returned to Norfolk on Oct. 12.

“To the Carrier Strike Group 10 warfare commanders, thank you for your hard work and dedication in making sure your ships and aircraft were ready each day,” McLane said. “Thank you for leading your Sailors so that they were always ready to call for fire.

Cheeseman previously served as Commander, Carrier Strike Group 2. He commissioned through the Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps Program at Pennsylvania State University, took command of CSG 2 in April 2020, and provided combat ready maritime forces to support the Maritime Strategy during the challenging COVID 19 pandemic.

“I look forward to leading Carrier Strike Group 10 as her units prepare for deployment,” Cheeseman said. “The readiness of our force is a top priority and we will tackle the challenge head on, both training our Sailors to the highest standard and ensuring the material condition of our ships and aircraft.”

The units under CCSG 10 were realigned shortly after returning from deployment and now include the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77), Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruisers USS San Jacinto (CG 56), USS Leyte Gulf (CG 55), Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 7, and Commander, Destroyer Squadron (CDS) 26.
