FORT STEWART, GA -- The South Carolina National Guard provided cyber assets to support the 3rd Infantry Division’s command post exercise (CPX) Nov. 16-20, 2020 at Fort Stewart, Georgia, to test the 3rd Infantry Division’s capabilities to respond to cyber threats.
U.S. Army National Guard Soldiers with the 125th Cyber Protection Battalion, South Carolina National Guard, participated in the CPX creating realistic cyber-focused scenarios for the exercise and serving as advisors supporting the integration of cyber capabilities, explained U.S. Army Chief Warrant Officer 4 Larry Fuller, 125th Cyber Protection Battalion cyber operations technician. The purpose of the exercise was to demonstrate the ability of the 3rd Infantry Division to conduct command and control in a large-scale combat operation environment.
“125th Cyber Protection Battalion personnel offered key insights to 3rd Infantry Division exercise control…and ensured that adversarial cyber-attacks were realistic and matched exercise training objectives,” added Fuller.
He explained, the primary mission of the 125th Cyber Protection Battalion includes conducting cyber and information operations in support of active duty military operations and conducting defensive cyberspace operations, which includes protecting and defending operations for federal, state, and local infrastructures. The CPX support for 3rd Infantry Division provided an opportunity for the 125th Cyber Protection Battalion to work at the division-level and support a complex, multi-level exercise, which will benefit South Carolina National Guard training exercises with applied experience with integrating cyber-related missions into exercise planning.
“We were able to help each other,” said U.S. Army Lt. Col. William Medlin, 125th Cyber Protection Battalion commander. “I…believed that helping the 3rd Infantry Division would not only foster better relations between [active duty] and [National Guard], but it would add valuable training to the 125th Cyber Protection Battalion.”
Participation in the CPX was mutually beneficial for the 3rd Infantry Division and the 125th Cyber Protection Battalion and the partnerships created are expected to continue to strengthen with plans for more provided support.
“They have already asked for additional support,” added Medlin. “They are planning to send a team to meet with the 228th Theater Tactical Signal Brigade, 151st Expeditionary Signal Battalion, and the 125th Cyber Protection Battalion to plan for future engagements.”
