MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. – Cpl. Jose L. Bustos was named the 2nd Tank Battalion Tanker of the Year and awarded a Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal during a ceremony at the Goettge Memorial Field House at Camp Lejeune, December 18, 2020.

The awards, which were presented by 2nd Marine Division Commanding General Maj. Gen. Francis L. Donovan II, were earned by Bustos for his performance while serving as an M1A1 Tank Gunner with Company A, 2nd Tank Battalion, which is being stood down in accordance with Marine Corps force design restructuring.

In addition to supervising the maintenance of six tanks in support of divestment initiatives for his former company, Bustos demonstrated mastery in tank gunnery during the execution of several platoon and company field exercises throughout 2020. He was also directly involved in the combat marksmanship training of 120 Marines in his battalion while serving as a combat marksmanship instructor.

“This award is for my Marines at alpha company,” said Bustos during the ceremony. “I was trying to help them every way I could, in and out of the tank.”

Bustos recently executed a lateral move and is now serving as a distribution management specialist with Marine Air-Ground Task Force Materiel Distribution Center (MMDC) Company, 2nd Supply Battalion, 2nd Marine Logistics Group.

“Cpl Bustos has hit the ground running since his arrival here at MMDC Company,” said Capt. Harvey P. Lacanilao, commanding officer of MMDC Company, 2nd Supply Battalion. “He has excellent work ethic and has been selected by several of our junior Marines to be their mentor.”
