May is mental health awareness month. Nevermore in our recent history was there a time when mental health has taken more of a front seat in our daily conversations.

"Stop the Stigma" is a campaign and the focus for mental health and awareness. Magellan Health, the DFAS employee assistance program (EAP) provider, has provided many resources for employees and their families.

Magellan is a dedicated partner in the mental health community. They have new monthly updated content on their website as well as many webinars, printable materials and telehealth counseling.

Shayla Jones, DFAS EAP administrator, states, "I encourage employees to reach out to their support system (trusted friends, family members, co-workers, etc.) during this time to talk about your worries, fears and anxieties. EAP is available to be that support as well if you need it."

Mental illness doesn't discriminate. According to the Magellan Healthcare flyer, over 44 million American adults have a mental health condition and one in five youth between the ages of 13–18 experiences a severe mental disorder at some point during their life. With isolation, loss of resources, lack of school support, and stressful home conditions, those numbers are on the rise.

Magellan suggests practicing these tips to "Stamp Out Stigma":
◦Recognize when you or someone you care about needs help. Recognize when someone isn't getting the help they need. Recognize when stigma is creating a barrier to care.
◦Reeducate yourself and others on mental health. Reeducate yourself and others on how to find the path to recovery and that it is possible for all.
◦Reduce stigma. Reduce hesitation in seeking care. Reduce misunderstandings. Reduce bullying, shaming and insensitivity.

Information for May events is here and new resources and information will be posted June 1 and each month after that. Phone service is also available free of charge, 24/7 at 1-866-580-9046.

If you or someone you know needs help, please call 1-800-273-8255 for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline.
