MARINE CORPS AIR STATION BEAUFORT, S.C. - When one of Fightertown's Humvees, fire trucks or weapons needs repair, the Air Station can rest assured the Marines and Sailors of Combat Logistics Company 23 will be hard at work to repair the equipment.
Combat Logistics Company 23, also known as the Roughnecks, is a detachment of Combat Logistics Regiment 2, 2nd Marine Logistic Group based out of Camp Lejeune, N.C. Combat Logistics Company 23 has been here since Nov. 25, 1976, to support Fleet Marine Force units aboard the air station.
The 78 Marines and Sailors of CLC-23 have several jobs which include diesel mechanics, heavy equipment operators and electrical equipment specialists.
Although there are many diverse military occupational specialties for the Marines of CLC-23, each of them are capable of performing the task of the Marines to their left and right.
"My favorite part of working here is working with the Marines and Sailors among this base," said Master Sgt. Lovern Washington, the staff non-commissioned officer-in-charge for CLC-23.
Combat Logistics Company 23 sends its Marines, including the commanding officer, and executive officer on deployments in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom.
"Although we do not deploy as an entire unit, the Marines do deploy as individual augments with other units," Washington said. "Without us in the field, there would be no electrical repairs, engine repairs and a lack of several other repairs."
Much of what CLC-23 does is similar to everyday jobs which are in the civilian communities.
"This job is great when trying to find a civilian job in the future because of the hands-on experience you get with mechanics," Washington said.
Combat Logistics Company 23 is a very important part of the air station.
"The biggest daily challenge is getting the right parts in time for repairs," said Staff Sgt. Corey Cooper, the utilities chief with CLC-23. "We constantly have something going on or something to fix, and all of the equipment is essential to base."
"I love my job because it offers great opportunities of being creative by building and fixing equipment," said Lance Cpl. Michael Haataja, the welding non-commissioned officer of CLC-23. "I have been able to build pull-up bars, cages, as well as other equipment. Even though we are a small unit, we always find a way to get things done."
