On November 19, Iowa Army Ammunition Plant held a groundbreaking ceremony for a new, centralized solid and hazardous waste facility. This project will equip IAAAP with modern, efficient, effective, and permit-compliant equipment for processing the waste generated from production.
“Currently, recycling and disposal operations are located across several areas of the plant,” said Lt. Col. Eric Schilling, IAAAP Commander. “The buildings are structurally sound, but in overall poor condition and would require substantial investment over three to five years. The current buildings have no fire suppression or detection, no restrooms, no HVAC or insulation. The intent of this new facility is to centralize our solid waste disposal and recycling, and to provide new capabilities to support the various activities that generate solid waste around the plant.”
Schilling appreciates the work the recycling staff does, under less than ideal conditions, and said, “The recycling team does phenomenal work and I’m excited to see them get a facility commensurate with their level of performance.”
Completion of this project will also include procedures and practices to ensure IAAAP complies with its solid waste facility permit, so that no violations are identified during EPA inspections.
One of the other major goals of this project will be to increase IAAAP’s waste diversion rate to align with policy outlined in the Department of Defense’s Integrated Recycling and Solid Waste Management Instruction, which applies to government-owned, contractor-operated facilities and requires a consolidation of installation solid waste management and diversion activities.
In addition, the new facility will move IAAAP toward a consolidated, more-efficient footprint, supporting the modernization efforts of the plant.
American Ordnance is providing all labor, materials, equipment, and transportation necessary for the design, construction, and procurement of the facility. The facility will be constructed in accordance with the Guiding Principles for Sustainable Federal Buildings and also meets the requirements of the American’s with Disabilities Act and gives priority to sustainable-designed facility materials.
“This project nests with the Army’s modernization guidance, as well as supports the IAAAP Visioning and Area Development Plan,” said Schilling. “The IAAAP and American Ordnance share a commitment to good stewardship of the installation and the environment.”
The Iowa Army Ammunition Plant produces and delivers component assembly, and medium- and large-caliber ammunition items for the Department of Defense, using modern production methods in support of worldwide operations.
