MIHAMA, OKINAWA, Japan — Service members and dependents stationed on Okinawa volunteered with the Single Marine Program to clean up American Village in Mihama Jan. 16.

More than 30 members of the U.S. military community walked along Mihama Beach and through American Village picking up trash while also greeting members of the local community on the Saturday morning.

“The reason why we do this is that we want to give back to the community and give back to the people of Okinawa,” said U.S. Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Jarod J. Jankowski, a landing support specialist with Combat Logistics Battalion 4, 3rd Marine Logistics Group and the assistant president of the Camp Foster SMP. “One of the pillars of the SMP is community involvement, and this is a good way for Marines to get out of their room, get a couple of [volunteer] hours and clean up American Village.

Whether in a small group, a pair, or solo, the volunteers scoured the area for trash which was divided up between perishable and recyclable waste.

“We had 11 bags of trash and three bags of recycle waste,” said Jankowski. “This was a pretty good haul, a little bit better than what we are used to.”

U.S. Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Trevor Bellagamba, a religious program specialist with 3rd Medical Battalion, 3rd MLG, attended the event as well and expressed his view over the entire cleanup.

“The attitude is always good,” said Bellagamba, who is also the treasurer for the Camp Foster SMP. “Today was a beautiful sunny day, and was perfect for people to volunteer.”

According to Bellagamba, some of the reasons he likes cleaning up American Village is because it allows service members who are new to the island to explore the area since it’s home to many restaurants and shops popular to those in the military community, and he enjoys the feeling of volunteering for the things he cares for a great deal.

Everyone who participated in the cleanup received letters of appreciation from the Camp Foster SMP for the hard morning’s work.

The Camp Foster SMP hosts an American Village cleanup every month along with a beach cleanup.

The SMP serves as the voice for single Marines in identifying concerns, developing initiatives, and providing recommendations through advocacy, recreational activities, special events and community involvement.
