FORT INDIANTOWN GAP, Pa. -- Pennsylvania National Guard Soldiers installed a VHF antenna mast during training on Jan. 14, 2021.

“This training allowed personnel to become familiar with the BlueSky Mast antenna system and provided hands-on instruction on setup and tear down,” said Chief Warrant Officer 2 Scott Corson, information systems technician with the 55th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade.

The combined team of Soldiers from the 55th MEB, 28th Infantry Division, 56th Stryker Brigade Combat Team and 2nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team were trained in familiarizing themselves with the Disaster Incident Response Emergency Communications Terminal (DIRECT).

“The DIRECT is a [Pennsylvania National Guard] asset providing commercial services to include phone, internet with Wi-Fi, cross-banding, and 4G LTE, to first responders,” Corson said. “This capability bridges the gap between military and first responders at the state and local levels to communicate effectively and provide those services in the event of a natural disaster.”

Training with the DIRECT system helps prepare these Soldiers to ensure they are prepared to utilize the equipment during future missions.

“The intent of this training is to provide JFHQ with operators to deploy the DIRECT in the event of an emergency situation within a [Pennsylvania Task Force] region,” said Corson. “And we can continue to support our units no matter the situation.”
