F.E. WARREN AIR FORCE BASE, Wyo. -- virtual reality simulator is coming to the 373rd Training Squadron’s Detachment 21 on F. E. Warren Air Force Base, Wyoming, next month to improve training for missile maintainers.
“About eight months ago, we got to see some VR equipment being showcased to Logistics Readiness Squadron and Security Forces,” said Master Sgt. Benjamin Smith, training detachment superintendent, 373rd TRS. “We were blown away by the technology.”
The 373rd TRS purchased the VR simulator in efforts to make innovations to their training, according to Smith.
“What’s neat about the VR simulator is that it actually has our specific vehicles in it,” said Smith. “It has a payload transporter, it’s going to have the transporter erector and all of the other equipment that we have.”
The VR simulator has the ability to replicate varying environments and weather patterns so that maintainers can receive more versatile training and be ready to adapt in the field, giving them near to real life experience without being on the road.
“The training allows us to save on fuel consumption and maintenance fees,” said Staff Sgt. Kody Bowman, special purpose vehicle operations instructor, 373rd TRS.
The VR simulation also improves safety by allowing Airmen to encounter dangerous situations virtually rather than in person, according to Bowman.
“When you hit a bump, you will feel it since the VR simulation has built-in hydraulics,” said Bowman.
Detachment 21 is the first ICBM training detachment to implement virtual reality into training.
“The ICBM mission is to keep the nuclear arsenal ready to go and to prevent our adversaries from trying to strike us,” said Bowman. “We’re giving our Airmen the training they need to be more mission ready, which ultimately supports the ICBM mission.”
The introduction of the VR simulator is part of a larger effort to use more innovation and technology to better train maintainers.
