GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas - 20 military vehicles and dozens of troops from the 949th Brigade Support Battalion, Texas Army National Guard, have begun supporting winter-storm relief efforts Feb. 21, 2021, in North Texas.
TXARNG troops have provided logistics support at essential-supplies distribution points in Fort Worth, Ennis, and in smaller surrounding counties. This activation in North Texas comes as hundreds more troops have provided similar support throughout Texas.
TXARNG motor transport operators and helicopter crews, alongside local fire departments and other local organizations, have worked long hours distributing food and water to those most effected by outages caused by the winter storm some days ago.
“This is what I signed up for,” said Spc. Cone Smith, a motor transport operator with the 949th BSB. “We have many responsibilities in the National Guard and serving in my own community alongside my fellow community members has been an amazing experience.”
TXARNG personnel are expected to continue supporting relief efforts through the end of the week at the request of the Texas Department of Emergency Management.
"Our Soldiers will remain ready to support local authorities in whichever way we can", said Capt. Andrea Desecki, commander of the 949th BSB's headquarters company. "We're Texans serving Texans and we're proud to serve our communities in their time of need."
