HOHENFELS, Germany – Throughout the changes and enhancements that the U.S. Regionally Aligned Force (RAF) has undergone, the mission remains the same: enhance 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division’s, or, “Ironhorse”, readiness in the European theater and cement interoperability with multinational forces to fight and win against any adversary. This mission is accomplished when these force train together in exercises such as Combined Resolve XV at Hohenfels Training Area.

Taking place in February 2021, the Headquarters Department of the Army (HQDA) directed training event exercises the U.S. RAF brigade in support of the European Command’s objectives.

“Combined Resolve is a Joint Multinational Exercise that trains large-scale combat operations in a contested environment to replicate combat in the European theater,” said Lt. Colonel Thomas Burns, Exercises and Mission Command (EMC) chief, Joint Multinational Readiness Command. “Between U.S., multinational and joint forces, we have over 2,000 participants in CBR XV supporting the exercise.”

During the training event, the EMC’s focus is to keep the flow of the training smooth while the situational scenarios are implemented. These scenarios, known as Combat Battle Injects (CBI), are specific events designed to play out in actions that contribute to the overall training exercise and operational environment.

COVID-19 precautions are an additional consideration in the training environment, however, training coordinators at JMRC are ready to rise to the challenge of keeping soldiers safe and healthy while meeting training requirements.

“It opens your horizons to knew ways to conduct business… things you didn’t think were possible now become possible,” said Maj. Michael Goodman, training and operations officer for the 1st Battalion, 4th Infantry Regiment. “It’s more of a challenge, but we’re still able to achieve the mission to a high degree.”

The situational scenarios and CBIs provide the training participants exposure in different areas are modeled after real-life examples of combat, preparing the participants for specific threats in that area of warfare during training and in their real-world missions.

“Ironhorse is stronger together when paired with our multi-national partners,” said Lt. Colonel Nicholas Dvonch, Acting Brigade Commander of 1ABCT, 1CD. “Nowhere else is this more evident than during Combined Resolve XV as we train together conducting Large Scale Ground Combat Operations.”

“Intense training opportunities such as these readily show the combined force's ability to fight and win on any battlefield,” Dvonch added.

Combined Resolve XV is a Headquarters Department of the Army directed multinational exercise designed to build 1ABCT, 1CD’s readiness and enhance interoperability with allied forces and partner nations to fight and win against any adversary.
