U. S. Marine Gunnery Sgt. Eric Newman has been promoted six times in his Marine Corps career. Every time he has marched to the promoting officer, saluted him, and stood at attention as the words, “To all who shall see these presents greeting” are echoed out by the enlisted Marine standing next to the promoting officer. This time however, the narrative has changed. After marching to the promoting officer and giving the proper greeting of the day, the words are not followed by ones that are standard for a promotion to the next enlisted rank, but an appointment as a warrant officer in the United States Marine Corps.
Newman was pinned to the rank of Warrant Officer on February 11, by three special people; his daughter; his recruiter Master Gunnery Sgt. Nicholas Tyciak III, the recruiter instructor of Recruiting Station Columbus Ohio; and his recruit training senior drill instructor Sgt. Maj. Christopher Thomas the Recruiting Station Harrisburg, Pennsylvania sergeant major.
Newman’s story started with a phone call from then Sgt. Tyciak the local recruiter for Recruiting Substation Fort Pierce, Florida.
“I called this kid on a Saturday morning, and his dad had answered the phone and woke him up just to talk to me,” said Tyciak. “He agreed to come down to my office to learn more about the Marine Corps and reaching his goals, and the rest was history."
After swearing into the Delayed Entry Program and ultimately shipping to Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, South Carolina, Newman met his senior drill instructor, then Staff Sgt. Thomas.
“I remember recruit Neman just as well as I can see him today,” said Thomas. “He was a young man with no direction that was able to find it while at recruit training. Throughout the cycle I could see the potential to be a great Marine that, at the time, he did not even see yet.”
Once a basically trained Marine and graduate of Marine Combat Training and his military occupational school, Newman began his Marine Corps career as an automotive maintenance technician and went on to be a motor transport maintenance chief, while successfully finishing a tour on drill instructor duty as well. He was as a staff sergeant when he applied for the warrant officer program and was selected in October 2020, as well as selected to the rank of gunnery sergeant.
When selected and given the date and time of the appointment ceremony, he knew he wanted the two men that helped him enter the Marine Corps and mentored him through his career.
“14 years ago I did not even know I wanted to be a Marine,” said Newman. “I didn’t know I would make a career out of it or even had what it takes to be selected for the warrant officer program. But these men did. Master Gunnery Sgt. Tyciak saw something in me that I had yet to see and continued to see it long after I had gone to MEPS, boot camp, and started my career in the fleet. If it was not for these two men I am not sure where I would be. Being appointed as a warrant officer is not just a testament to my hard work but for theirs too.”
After completion of the Warrant Officer Basic Course and The Basic School, Newman will hold the MOS of Motor Transport Maintenance Officer and continue his career as a warrant officer of Marines.
