The F.E. Warren Air Force Base Post Office is essential for delivering and receiving mail for base residents.
Lynette Tafoya, lead technician window clerk, works at the post office every day Monday through Friday.
Tafoya is not new to military life. In 1991, she enlisted in the United States Army working as a dental specialist.
“After my six year contract, I tried to find work in the dental industry,“ Tafoya said. “I realized it just wasn’t for me.”
Her mother, who is now a retired postal employee, encouraged Tafoya to join the postal service. They worked together for 12 years before Tafoya moved to Wyoming with her daughter.
Tafoya hopes to stay in the postal service until she retires, which will give her a total of 38 years working for the government.
Her dedication to supporting the mission exemplifies the important role the postal office plays.
“90% of the time I work through my lunch,” Tafoya said. “When there is mail that needs to get out, I’ll make sure it gets done.”
Any day Tafoya receives between 50 to 230 packages and 300 letters.
“It’s extremely important for me to go through the mail and make sure everything is delivered and sorted into the correct places,” said Tafoya.
Tafoya is rarely seen without a smile and constantly keeps a positive attitude, but she ensures her job isn’t always an easy one.
“There has been a lot of bad and a lot of good,” said Tafoya. “I’ve sacrificed time with family, funerals, holidays, but I know how important my job is.”
A large part of her job is teaching new Airmen how to send and receive mail.
“I’m the Airmen’s only way of getting mail,” said Tafoya.
Tafoya patiently explains to each new Airman who walks into the building how to set up their PO Box.
“Honestly that’s my favorite part, these Airmen are just getting out on their own, coming in right from high school,” said Tafoya. “It feels good to be able to help.”
Her positive attitude goes a long way when assisting customers.
“She was one of the first people I met on base, she was really helpful and answered any questions I had,” said Senior Airman Nicholas Luong, 90th Security Forces Squadron.
Troops have looked to the post office for generations to receive and deliver mail. Tafoya's commitment to the mission is demonstrated through her positive attitude and willingness to help.
