Women’s History Month celebrates the important contributions of women to our nation, both historically and today. We highlight the efforts of Specialist Liliana AldanaGomez assigned to the 409th Engineer Vertical Construction Company in Windsor, Colorado.
AldanaGomez specializes as a plumber (12K). She supports Urban Search & Rescue operations. During a recent training exercises in Nevada she performed emergency shoring operations in a rescue incident.
Shoring is a critical measure for temporary stabilization or re-support of damaged structural members or systems subject to continued movement or collapse. “If there is a structural collapse and a building was leaning or falling over we would build a shore to hold up the building so it wouldn't fall over,” said AldanaGomez.
Shoring is used in order to provide a safer and more efficient working environment while Soldiers extricate victims in a rescue situation. “It could be that someone's stuck on a specific floor and that we need to breach that wall and be able to help them.”
Assessing a structure is an important factor for determining the course of action.
“A lot of the material that we're working with can be a factor; the type of building, the soil type, if it's concrete, just dirt, are all factors.”
AldanaGomez has learned to identify risk with this type of rescue mission. She now sees the vulnerabilities in a certain type structures that if a situation were to arise she would know how to respond.
The Army is proud of today’s women Soldiers who serve with distinction and are role models exemplifying our highest values.
