USS Gettysburg (CG 64) conducted a Change of Command ceremony aboard the guided missile cruiser, March 19.

In accordance with naval regulations and traditions, while observing COVID-19 guidelines, the crew of Gettysburg gathered to bid farewell to Capt. Corey Keniston and welcomed Capt. Megan Thomas as their new Commanding Officer.

“It’s been an absolute honor and pleasure to serve alongside Gettysburg Sailors,” said Keniston. “I am humbled by the effort which has gone into restoring the ship back to its original glory after six years of inactivity. No one will ever forget what the Gettysburg crew did here. No ship in the fleet has accomplished what they have done, and I have full confidence Capt. Thomas and the crew will get Gettysburg combat ready.”

Keniston assumed command of Gettysburg in March 2018. While in command, he led the crew through the ship’s Cruiser Modernization and Service Life Extension Program, which lasted over five years and was the first of its kind. Keniston also spearheaded the first iteration of the Expanded Operational Stress Control Program while in command of Gettysburg, lending his leadership to the development and success of the novel program.

During the ceremony, Keniston was presented with the Legion of Merit for his many accomplishments as Commanding Officer. Following the award presentation, Keniston and Thomas officially changed command by reading their orders to the crew.

Thomas previously held command of USS Farragut (DDG 99), and her other assignments include Executive Officer of Farragut, Main Propulsion Assistant aboard USS Enterprise (CVN 65), and Operations Officer aboard USS Mitscher (DDG 57).

“I am extremely honored to have the opportunity to serve as the commander for the incredibly dedicated crew of the Gettysburg,” said Thomas. “Capt. Keniston’s leadership through this challenging and unique availability period has set the stage for success, and I look forward to building on their hard work as we restore the ship in order to carry out our nation's tasking.”
