VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Information Warfare Training Command (IWTC) Virginia Beach’s Commanding Officer Cmdr. James Brennan meritoriously advanced Intelligence Specialist (IS) 2nd Class Kimberly Dunn to the rank of petty officer first class under the Navy’s calendar-year 2021 Meritorious Advancement Program (MAP) Season One.

MAP provides a way for command leadership to advance their most qualified Sailors ahead the semi-annual Navy-wide Advancement Cycles.

“As a commanding officer, it is a great privilege to have the ability to early advance our most outstanding Sailors to the next rank,” said Brennan. “Our selection process is quite stringent and we are happy to highlight the many accomplishments that now IS1 Dunn has accomplished during her time at IWTC Virginia Beach. We very much look forward to her continued efforts to set an example of how to succeed at this command and in the fleet.”

Dunn hails from Oxnard, California, and enlisted in the Navy in 2015 after being inspired by both her father and grandfather’s prior naval service. After graduating from Recruit Training Command at Great Lakes, she reported to IWTC Virginia Beach to attend Intelligence Specialist “A” School where she was selected to complete Imagery Interpretation “C” School.

Following training, Dunn reported to her first operational tour at Naval Information Forces Fleet Intelligence Detachment where she completed two deployments aboard USS Bataan (LHD 3) and USS Kearsarge (LHD 3). While deployed, she earned her enlisted surface, aviation and information warfare specialist qualifications.

Dunn selected orders to IWTC Virginia Beach to serve as an instructor in seven separate courses, providing over 600 hours of curriculum and mentorship to both enlisted and officer students. As N712 department supply petty officer, she established a supply acquisition pipeline for 11 divisions, enabling IWTC Virginia Beach instructors to obtain the necessary material to support their respective curriculums.

“Even though we may feel no one is watching, it is imperative to be a leader, and always strive for greatness,” commented Dunn about her recent promotion.

IWTC Virginia Beach currently offers 59 courses of instruction in information technology, cryptology, and intelligence with an instructor and support staff of 278 military, civilian, and contract members who train over 6,600 students every year at five training sites in the Hampton Roads area. It is one of four school houses for Center for Information Warfare Training (CIWT) and also oversees learning sites at Jacksonville and Mayport, Florida; Kings Bay, Georgia; and Groton, Connecticut to continue aligning information warfare community training.

With four schoolhouse commands, a detachment, and training sites throughout the United States and Japan, CIWT trains over 22,000 students every year, delivering trained information warfare professionals to the Navy and joint services. CIWT also offers more than 200 courses for cryptologic technicians, intelligence specialists, information systems technicians, electronics technicians, and officers in the information warfare community.
