Navy Diver 1st Class (DWS/EXW/SW) Ryan M. Murphy was recognized as the Naval Submarine School’s instructor of the quarter for second quarter 2021 by Captain Steven W. Antcliff, Commanding Officer, Naval Submarine School, aboard Naval Submarine Base New London on March 26, 2021.
A native of Seattle, Washington with over sixteen years of naval service, Murphy is an instructor for the Pressurized Submarine Escape Trainer (PSET). This course trains future submariners on the process of escaping a submarine in the case of an emergency. Murphy serves as one of two PSET control officers.
As PSET control officer, Murphy expertly delivered 86 hours of instruction ensuring the successful graduation of over 470 students this quarter.
Murphy was also recognized as not only a superb instructor to the students at Naval Submarine School, but also as a mentor to his colleagues in the high-risk training department. In the citation recognizing Swopes, Antcliff said that “Murphy was instrumental in qualifying four of his peers as high-risk training instructors.”
The Instructor of the Quarter designation is awarded to both enlisted and officer instructors selected by their commands as the example of what it means to be an instructor, and is accompanied by the award of the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal.
