GREAT LAKES, Ill. (April 5, 2021) – Naval Station Great Lakes announced their Sailors of the Quarter for the first quarter for 2021.
Master-at-Arms 1st Class Douglass Hawkins from Lake Villa, Illinois, was named Sailor of the Quarter for Great Lakes. Hawkins works as the security department operations and training leading petty officer for Great Lakes. He has been in the Navy for 15 years and aboard Great Lakes for a year.
“I feel it is a great honor to be recognized as the NSGL Sailor of the Quarter,” said Hawkins. “All of my peers work exceptionally hard and are equally deserving of this. To be recognized by our leadership for my efforts and dedication means a lot to me. It proves what I have believed for the past 15 years of my career: you show up every day, do your duty to the best of your ability, work with those toward common goals and your efforts will be recognized.”
As the Training LPO, Hawkins supervises two Sailors in the daily management and upkeep of over 180 training records and assists in all classroom trainings, small arms ranges, Augmented Security Force academies, and annual statement trainings. As the Operations LPO, he supervises 54 enlisted Sailors in their day to day duties. Additionally he is the Anti-Terrorism Training Team Coordinator, planning, developing, and implementing all Security Force drills in compliance with CNIC standards.
“I love being in the Navy,” said Hawkins. “I love the pride and heritage that comes with putting on the uniform every day, serving something greater than myself. I felt that way when I enlisted for the first time and it has stayed with me every day since then. Specifically, now being in the Training Department, I really enjoy teaching junior Sailors. It means a lot to me to pass on my knowledge, see them grow on personnel and professional level and start to achieve their goals.”
