The Arizona National Guard, as a part of the COVID-19 relief efforts, has helped vaccinated more than 5,200 Arizona Department of Corrections, Rehabilitation and Reentry employees as of March 24, 2021. The AZNG is assisting with vaccinations throughout the entire state, and has helped at all 10 ADCRR complexes in Ariz.
“It’s important for these employees [Correctional officers] to get the vaccine, because they are our first line of defense in overseeing the incarcerated individuals,” said Mindy Nipps, an Licensed Practical Nurse with the ADCRR Monitoring Bureau. “It is important for them to be healthy enough to report to work and do what they are hired to do.”
Roughly 2,700 ADCRR employees have tested positive for COVID-19 since February 2020, according to the ADCRR website. The Guard has coordinated and worked with the Department of Corrections to train corrections medical staff in COVID-19 rapid testing since December 2020.
"We are grateful for the support of Governor Doug Ducey, ADHS, and the Arizona National Guard, in helping provide vaccines to ADCRR employees across the state," said ADCRR Director David Shinn. "The tireless and dedicated response of the guardsmen ensured many employees received the vaccine and is showing a significant impact towards keeping inmates, correctional employees and our communities safe."
The Guard began assisting with the vaccination of corrections employees in January 2021. More than 5,200 correctional officers have been vaccinated as of March 24, 2021. The vaccine is given on a voluntary basis. “I got my vaccine to do my part to stop the spread,” said Douglas Correctional Facility Corrections Officer Adrian Diaz.
Arizona Governor Doug Ducey’s plan to vaccinate Arizona was implemented in January, and already 3.3 million Arizona residents have received one or more vaccines, according to the Centers for Disease Control website. The Governor announced March 22 that vaccines are available to all Arizona residents over the age of 16 as of March 24. The Arizona Guard continues to help with vaccinations and other relief efforts across the entire state.
“Our goal has been and remains to get vaccine into the community as quickly, widely and equitably as possible,” said Governor Ducey in a news release March 22, 2021.
