NORFOLK, Va. (April 1, 2021) – In celebration of the 128th birthday of the chief petty officer (CPO), Naval Station (NAVSTA) Norfolk’s CPOs conducted morning colors and held a cake cutting ceremony, April 1.
The rank of chief petty officer was established in General Order 409 on April 1, 1893. It is meant to bridge the gap between officers and enlisted personnel and to act as supervisors as well as advocates for their Sailors.
Since that day, the birth of the revered title is celebrated annually to honor the service of chief petty officers committed to developing their junior sailors and instilling them with the Navy core values.
“This is my first year as a chief petty officer,” explains Chief Culinary Specialist Joseph Dazzo. “It has been special to have the opportunity to watch other Chiefs before me. For the junior Sailors who aspire to become a chief I would advise them to work hard, stay motivated, and to keep pushing through.”
The cake cutting ceremony was coordinated by Senior Chief Master-at-Arms Roy Collins who described this ceremony as a way to be able to catch up with his brothers and sisters around the base who he does not get to see very often due to his busy work schedule.
“It is important to keep our traditions alive because it helps shape our values and reminds us that we are a very important piece of naval history as well as a pivotal piece in shaping the Navy’s future,” states Collins.
The navy added senior and master chief petty officers to the enlisted ranks on June 1, 1958.
