GROTON, Conn. – USS Indiana (SSN 789) conducted an outdoor change of command ceremony at Naval Submarine Base New London in Groton, Conn. Friday, April 9.

Cmdr. Scott Bresnahan relieved Cmdr. David Grogan as commanding officer of the Virginia-class submarine during the event, which was limited in capacity due to ongoing COVID-19 restrictions.

Capt. Matthew Boland, commodore of Submarine Squadron (SUBRON) TWELVE, presided over the ceremony.

“I’m immensely proud of Cmdr. Dave Grogan and all that he has accomplished on USS Indiana. He took Indiana on their maiden deployment and has continued to elevate the standard,” Boland said. “I know the incoming skipper, Cmdr. Scott Bresnahan, from previous experience. He’s a great leader and is going to do fantastic things aboard this lethal warship.”

Outgoing skipper Grogan, who assumed command of Indiana in September 2018, praised the crew saying he, “will forever be in debt to the hardworking officers and sailors of the “Battle Bass,” the boat’s nickname.

“They faced every challenge with honor and strength and proudly did the work of our great nation without complaint,” Grogan said. “They epitomize the hard-working, humble nature of our namesake state and can proudly call themselves Hoosiers.”

Grogan recalled the highlight of his tour as “each time a new junior officer completed their first simulated sinking or an enlisted Sailor earned their Dolphins.”

“The smiles on their faces when they complete those pinnacle events will never be forgotten,” Grogan added.

Grogan also praised his successor saying “I can't think of a better officer to replace me than Scott Bresnahan.”

Bresnahan congratulated his predecessor, stating he is “thrilled for the opportunity to be a part of this exceptional crew.”

“Even after a short period of meeting and observing them operate, this crew has proven to have no ceiling,” Bresnahan said. “I look forward to continuing the positive trend Cmdr. Grogan has driven in command.”

Grogan, a native of Cincinnati, Ohio, is a 1999 graduate of the University of New Orleans and 2011 graduate of the Army Command and General Staff College. Previous sea tours include the USS City of Corpus Christi (SSN 705), USS Virginia (SSN 774), and an executive officer tour aboard USS Missouri (SSN 780).

Bresnahan, a native of Fairfax Station, Va., is a 2003 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy and 2020 graduate of the National War College. Previous sea tours include the USS La Jolla (SSN 701), USS Texas (SSN 775), and an executive officer tour aboard the USS North Carolina (SSN 777).

Indiana, commissioned Sept. 29, 2018, third U.S. warship named after the Hoosier State – and is homeported in Groton, Conn.

Indiana and crew operated under SUBRON 12. The squadron’s mission is to provide attack submarines that are ready, willing, and able to meet the unique challenges of undersea combat and deployed operations in unforgiving environments across the globe. It is one of two SUBRONs based out of Naval Submarine Base New London in Groton, Conn.
