Fort McCoy community members wrapped up a session of Financial Peace University with a luncheon March 16 at McCoy's Community Center.

The Religious Support Office (RSO) organizes sessions of Financial Peace University several times throughout the year. The class was created by Dave Ramsey, a personal finance adviser, radio show host, and author. Financial Peace University advocates using the "debt snowball" method of paying down debt, which is starting with the smallest outstanding balance and working your way up to larger balances.

RSO typically hosts these classes in person, but because of precautions due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the latest class was conducted virtually. Class members only met in person for the last session for a celebration lunch.

RSO staff members provided some statistics that class members had voluntarily provided. In nine weeks, class members reported saving a total of $15,000 in emergency funds and paying off approximately $45,000 in credit card, student loan, and other debt. They also reported saving about $2,500 a year by reviewing and updating their insurance policies.

Class members also shared some thoughts on the class and financial lessons, which were submitted anonymously.

"Life is predictable; Christmas is always on Dec. 25, and my kids' birthdays are always the same day, thus I can plan for it," one class member wrote.

"Overall, this class has been a blessing in my life by teaching me financial discipline in order to reach financial freedom," another student wrote.

RSO staff members plan to keep holding sessions as long as community members are interested. Class notices are sent out via communitywide email, but those interested can also request to be put on a waiting list by calling RSO at 608-388-3528.
