KANDAHAR, Afghanistan - Petty Officer 3rd Class Ernesto Hernandez Fonte, a mass communications specialist from Miami, Fla., assigned to the Seabees of the 30th Naval Construction Regiment is currently serving in Kandahar, Afghanistan, in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
Hernandez immigrated to the U.S. from Cuba in 1996. He attended Miami Jackson Senior High School and is the son of Humberto Hernandez and Caridad Fonte, who reside in Miami, Fla.
Hernandez and the Sailors in his regiment are deployed from their homeport of Port Hueneme, Calif., to complete a six-month deployment to Afghanistan.
Hernandez' job is to tell the story of the U.S. Navy through news writing, photography and videography. While assigned to the regiment he covers the achievements of military engineers in southern Afghanistan.
"I can honestly say that I have the best job in the Navy," said Hernandez. "It's great to take photos of our Sailors and Soldiers for marketing to hometown news. Even if a photo is not published, service members appreciate the effort we put in to tell their story."
Hernandez, who joined the Navy March 28, 2007 says he feels proud to be part of an event that is making history.
"It's been my goal to deploy to Iraq or Afghanistan since I joined the Navy," said Hernandez. "This is a very unique and decisive moment in American history and I'm proud to be a part of that."
Sailors from 30NCR are providing general engineering support to U.S. Forces Afghanistan and NATO in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
