KANDAHAR, Afghanistan - Petty Officer 1st Class Charles Edward Nelson IV, a native of Bend, Ore., assigned to the Seabees of the 30th Naval Construction Regiment is currently serving in Kandahar, Afghanistan, in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
Nelson attended Mountain View High School and is the son of Charles Edward Nelson III and Patricia Grimm Nelson, who reside in Bend, Ore.
Nelson and the Seabees in his regiment departed from their homeport of Port Hueneme, Calif., to complete a six-month deployment to Afghanistan.
Nelson's job is to Plan and Estimate Construction Projects for Forward Operating Bases in southern Afghanistan.
Nelson, who's been in the Navy since June 1996, says he feels proud to be part of an event that is making history.
"This is my first six month deployment with the Seabees. I spent the first eight years of my career in the fleet and did a few deployments on a ship. Being with the Seabees is a completely different ball game. I find my job very challenging but I am learning something new everyday. Though I miss my family very much, I am proud to be serving in the United States military to support everyone's freedom back in the good old USA!"
Seabees bring a broad range of technical and military skills which, in combination, provide a unique capability to the engineering mission. In addition to construction, these essential capabilities include robust organic support functions such as logistics, maintenance and communications.
Seabees from 30NCR are providing general engineering support to U.S. Forces Afghanistan and NATO in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
