Let's face it; life is hard right now. Not only do all the regular stressors of life continue to bombard our everyday, but a single virus has seemingly halted our planet, country, community, and families.
Yet, there are people among us who have glared this virus in the face and made it their mission to keep going for the betterment of themselves, their family, and the community.

U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Victoria Goluszka is the embodiment of that fighting spirit. As an aerospace medical technician of the 182nd Medical Group Detachment 1, Goluszka answered the call to serve within the Illinois National Guard. She is numbered among the hundreds of guardsmen and women who assist with COVID-19 relief and vaccinations.

Goluszka currently performs her duties with a mobile unit which travels northern Illinois to distribute and administer the COVID-19 vaccination to the state's residents. Almost every day, she wakes up and puts on the uniform, knowing she will vaccinate hundreds of Illinoisans.

"I am definitely homesick, but it is really cool to be a part of this," Goluszka said with a smile, "You might think it's insignificant to give a shot, but some of these people sit down and start crying because they haven't left their home in a year; or even hugged their children."

As a new mother of an almost 1-year-old, Goluszka knows that pain of separation and it's not the end to the sacrifices she has made. With an associate's in Science and three semesters of nursing school down, Goluszka would have graduated from Kishwaukee College in Dekalb, Illinois in May of this year, but consequently cut down her course load to fulfill this COVID-19 mission.

Determined to finish school in 2021, Goluszka packed up and brought her microscope and school materials to complete half of her normal courses when she is not performing her duties.

Since January, 2021, Goluszka exemplifies the fighting spirit required in these hard times; not only for herself, but for those in need. Illinois residents can rest easy, knowing there a men and women like Staff Sgt. Victoria Goluszka determined to serve and help return our communities back to normal.
