Pensacola, Fla. (April 16, 2021) – Air Traffic Controller Petty Officer 2nd Class (AC2) Oscarine Diaz recently earned her Master Black Belt in the Lean Six Sigma (LSS) course.
Diaz grew up in Queens, New York, as the youngest of three children in a single mother household. Diaz knew she wanted stability for her future family and that motivated her to join the Navy. She joined in January 2018 and became the first sailor in her family.
After graduating from boot camp, Diaz came to Naval Air Station (NAS) Pensacola for accession training, commonly known as A School. After graduating A School, Diaz joined her first command in Greece at Naval Support Activity (NSA) Souda Bay. AC2 Diaz returned to Pensacola and is now at her second command at NAS Pensacola.
Diaz was encouraged to take the LSS course by her fiancé who was also planning on taking the course. LSS combines two process improvement methods, Lean and Six Sigma, to provide a series of steps that will improve organization efficiency and eliminate waste. Diaz paid for the course and completed the 96 hours of training on her own time.
“I believe you need to make little investments in yourself to improve as a whole,” Diaz stated.
LSS has a variety of belts that can be earned, and Diaz has recently received the most advanced one available. To earn this certification, she had to complete all the training hours and had to have a final project. She was given a scenario of a business that was experiencing trouble in various aspects of its daily routine. She then had to think of a solution and ensure that it benefited the business.
As a Master Black Belt, she will lead groups of others that are various LSS belt levels. Her role will be to coach them through the process and oversee their progress.
Although this course is not offered through the Navy, groups have been used at multiple commands to make their work environment more efficient. Diaz hopes to use her certification as a Master Black Belt to implement better practices throughout the Navy.
Diaz, who has always loved learning, is in the process of earning her associate’s degree and LSS has helped her narrow down her degree path.
“I feel more inclined to earn a degree where I will be able to utilize my Lean Six Sigma certification,” Diaz said.
Diaz has been working on establishing a Coalition of Service Members Against Destructive Decisions (CSADD) program here at NAS Pensacola. The purpose of CSADD is to provide service members with tools that will guide them in maintaining a positive lifestyle that aligns with the Navy’s core values.
Diaz hopes that the program will be available this summer. She hopes instilling CSADD onboard NAS Pensacola will inspire service members to take initiative in their self-growth both in and out of uniform.
