Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command Washington

Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command (NAVFAC) Washington’s dedicated staff of environmental professionals focuses each day on management of drinking water, wastewater, natural resources, hazardous waste, air protection, remediation and stormwater in the National Capital Region – all with the goal of protecting our environment. Stormwater is a focus of particular importance for NAVFAC Washington’s Environmental Business Line and its corps of environmental professionals.

When it comes to stormwater, one can see environmental protection in action all around them as they go about their day. Each installation throughout the United States Navy has a stormwater management program focused on treating stormwater runoff before it leaves the installation and enters public waterways. NAVFAC Washington’s Environmental Business Line proudly manages stormwater at Navy installations around the National Capital Region including Naval Support Activity Annapolis, Naval Support Activity Bethesda, Marine Corps Base Quantico, Naval Air Station Patuxent River, Naval Support Activity Washington, Joint Base Andrews, Naval Support Activity South Potomac and more.

A significant piece of NAVFAC Washington’s stormwater management program is the use of stormwater best management practices (BMPs). BMPs include both infrastructure projects and pro-active activities, such as street sweeping or nutrient (fertilizer) management plans, that work to minimize pollutants or capture pollutants before they leave the installation.

Structural BMPs are designed to capture pollutants in runoff and prevent them from reaching downstream water bodies, like the Chesapeake Bay. There are many different types of structural BMPs. Examples range from simple retention ponds and gardens to complex in-ground sand filters and revetment systems. Pollutants in stormwater runoff, such as oil from a parking lot or sediment from a construction site, are captured in a BMP while the clean stormwater continues through the stormwater conveyance system.

The NAVFAC Washington environmental team is dedicated to ensuring the environment in its area of responsibility is protected. On Earth Day 2021, the team supports the theme of restoring our Earth by continuing its mission to protect and restore ecosystems in the National Capital Region and reaffirming the drumbeat that every day is Earth Day.
