WASHINGTON D.C. – Navy installations demonstrate commitment to being stewards of their inherited natural resources, striking balance between environmental management and mission readiness.

As a result, Secretary of the Navy recently named five installations as recipients of the 2021 Environmental Awards. Naval Weapons Station Yorktown, Naval Station Everett, Naval Support Activity Bahrain, Naval Base San Diego and Naval Base Point Loma were recognized for executing successful environmental management programs, restoring habitats, recycling, restoration projects and more.

“Our installation teams work steadfastly to preserve cultural heritage, build trust with their communities and improve the environment where the Navy lives, works and trains,” said Brock Durig, environmental program director for Commander, Navy Installations Command. “Their ability to achieve conservation milestones while supporting the Navy mission continues to be impressive.”

NWS Yorktown received the award for Natural Resources Conservation, Large Installation due to their collaborations with local agencies to restore over 900 feet of shoreline, wildfire management planning and natural heritage assessment.

The award for Environmental Quality, Industrial Installation went to NAVSTA Everett for transitioning from lead-based ammunition to frangible rounds, setting new environmental management system goals and objectives as well as their strong government-to-government tribal relationships.

NSA Bahrain earned the accolade for Environmental Quality, Overseas Installation for diverting approximately 2,277 tons of materials from landfill for reuse and recycling, among other efforts.

Sustainability, Non-Industrial Installation went to NAVBAS San Diego for introducing new practices and equipment to reduce waste, capture pollutants and otherwise mitigate environmental impacts.

NAVBASE Point Loma was recognized for Cultural Resources Management, Small Installation due to numerous efforts including creative and responsible adaptive reuse of historic properties such as completing a multi-year restoration of a 100-year-old historic building.

All five winners have been nominated to compete in the Secretary of Defense Environmental Awards competition.

Commander, Navy Installations Command’s area of operations encompasses the globe, across 10 regions and 70 bases with more than 53,000 employees who sustain the fleet, enable the fighter, and support the family.
