CORVALLIS, Ore. -- The Oregon State University Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps (NROTC) participated in the annual Sexual Assault Prevention and Response (SAPR) Chalk It Up For Awareness contest hosted by the Naval Station Everett SAPR Team, April 17.
This contest is held every April as part of the Navy’s Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month (SAAPM) programs and is used to educate and raise awareness about sexual assault through sidewalk chalk art. Three NROTC midshipmen and two NROTC “Beaver Battalion” Officer Candidates collaborated on the chalk art design outside of the unit’s facility.
“This event was important to me because it is a way to start conversations about the reality that sexual assault happens,” said Officer Candidate Brooke Konstanczer. “It is my hope that these conversations can bring awareness and aid in prevention efforts to stop sexual assault while also bringing courage and strength to victims in knowing that they are not alone.”
This year’s theme is “RESPECT. PROTECT. EMPOWER.” It is asked that each of the participants play an active role by (1) embracing the diversity of ideas, experiences and backgrounds of all individuals (2) taking responsibility for a person’s actions (3) holding others accountable for their actions (4) intervening when necessary, and (5) being a leader and encouraging leadership in others.
“I hope this artwork speaks to everyone about how the magnitude of sexual assault affects a person and their identity. It is not an easy task to recover from. The words respect, protect, and empower I hope will strengthen all our ideals about preventing sexual assault,” said Officer Candidate Dominique Gramm. “I want to say that to everyone who has gone through this path; we are strong, we are all survivors, and we are not alone.”

The Navy ROTC program develops midshipmen mentally, morally and physically, to imbue them with the highest ideals of duty, loyalty and Navy core values. The program provides college graduates an opportunity to commission as naval officers who possess a basic professional background, are motivated toward careers in the naval service, and have potential for future development in mind and character, so as to assume the highest responsibilities of command, citizenship and government.
Naval Service Training Command (NSTC), commanded by Rear Adm. Jamie Sands and headquartered at Naval Station Great Lakes, supports 98 percent of initial officer and enlisted accessions training for the Navy, as well as the Navy’s Citizenship Development Program.
Sands and his NSTC staff at Great Lakes and at Naval Air Station Pensacola, Florida, also support Recruit Training Command (RTC), the Navy’s only boot camp, at Great Lakes; NROTC units at more than 160 colleges and universities across the country; Officer Training Command (OTC) in Newport, R. I.; Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (NJROTC) and Navy National Defense Cadet Corps (NNDCC) citizenship development programs at more than 600 high schools worldwide.
