RAMSTEIN AIR BASE, Germany – The 786th Force Support Squadron and the United States Air Forces in Europe-Air Forces Africa Innovation and Transformation Office celebrated new environmentally friendly fitness equipment at the Northside Fitness Center on Ramstein Air Base as part of Earth Week, April 23, 2021.
The equipment, known as Sports Art, is capable of harnessing human power and converting it to utility grade electricity. The two-year acquisition process was a team effort between the 786th FSS and USAFE-AFAFRICA’s Innovation and Technology office.
“These machines do not need any infrastructure to add power,” said Marcus Grothues, 786th FSS fitness and sports manager. “As you work out you create power and it goes right back into the system to power other things in the building. We’re not just going green, we’re making green if you look at it that way.”
The Northside Fitness Center has four of the G690 Verde treadmills that utilize ECO-POWR technology.
ECO-POWR is an innovative technology that harnesses up to 74% of human energy and converts it to utility grade electricity according to the Sports Art website.
In addition to the four treadmills, the Northside Fitness Center also has four bikes and cross-trainers. The Southside and Vogelweh Fitness Centers have one of each type of machine.
