EL CENTRO, Calif. — Naval Air Facility (NAF) El Centro Security Forces unveils a marksmanship and judgmental virtual weapons simulator to improve firearms training onboard NAF El Centro, April 23, 2021.

The weapons simulator provides programable firearms training which meets rigorous standards of military forces combined with modified law enforcement requirements.

“The simulator is designed to not only assist shooters who are struggling with basic marksmanship fundamentals but also has advanced scenarios,” said Matthew Poulsen, chief of security, NAF EL Centro. “This includes improving target acquisition, decision making, and perspective-correction without requiring the member to travel to a live-fire range.”

The laser-based simulator provides the marksman with an approximation of the weapon’s sound, weight and recoil. During the training members perform several courses using M4 rifles and 9mm pistol.

“The weapon systems feel accurate and realistic,” said Master-at-Arms 1st Class Justin Brandt, assigned to NAF El Centro. “There is no tether or wire, the pistol and rifle simulate weight, trigger control, site accuracy and requires magazine load.”

The simulators provide different looks and scenarios that help decision-making and use of deadly force reactions and judgements during an active-shooter event.

“At the conclusion of the evolution coaches can critique the performance by reviewing the data collected,” said Poulsen. “Including the exact position of hits and timing of fire-arm deployments which identify deficiencies with marksmanship and decision-making.”

Capt. William Perkins, commanding officer, NAF El Centro said the simulator allows Sailors to gain real-world experience with the use of realistic situations, while saving the Navy time and resources. “We are always interested in training between simulation and the best fidelity that can maximize availability.”

The mission of Naval Air Facility El Centro is to support the combat training and readiness of the Warfighter. This includes air operations support to operational fleet and training squadrons as well as squadrons from other services (USMC, USA, USAF) and Allies.
