CERRO GORDO, N.C. – The North Carolina Army National Guard provided a unique, memorable experience for four Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps programs and the West Columbus High School community in Cerro Gordo, North Carolina, April 21, 2021.
Approximately 250 people were able to learn about an M1A1 Abrams tank, assigned to Charlie Company, 1st Battalion, 120th Infantry Regiment, 30th Armored Brigade Combat Team, and other NCARNG wheeled vehicles, assigned the 1452nd Transportation Company, 113th Sustainment Brigade.
“This was a great experience for both, my Soldiers and these students,” said U.S. Army Capt. Emily Lilly, the commander of C CO, 1-120th IN BN, 30th ABCT. “It’s one thing to see a tank on a television screen or hear about it, but it’s completely another to stand next to it and see how large it is, to learn about the firepower and how powerful driving a tank and firing a tank can be.”
In addition to the JROTC cadets and WCHS community receiving this one-of-a-kind experience, the Soldiers supporting the event had memorable interactions.
“They (Soldiers) got to interact, first-hand, with the next generation and hopefully influence them…tell them about their real-life experiences, while on the (unit’s recent) deployment or (generally) with this company, as well as why it’s great to be a tanker,” said Lilly.
