Naval Base Kitsap-Bangor’s Trident Inn Galley received the Captain Edward. F. Ney Memorial Award from Rear Adm. Peter Stamatopoulos, commander, Naval Supply Systems Command, April 26.

“Congratulations to this stellar team who has demonstrated outstanding teamwork and leadership,” he said. “Job well done, and thank you for all that you do here in this galley.”

Acting Secretary of the Navy, Thomas W. Harker, announced the fiscal year 2021 winners of the Ney Awards for food service excellence, March 11. Trident Inn Galley was the West Coast General Mess category winner, representing Commander, Navy Installations Command.

“The Captain Edward F. Ney Memorial Award represents the highest honor given to U.S. Navy food service operations in recognition of food service excellence,” Stamatopoulos stated in a March news release. “The award encourages friendly competition among units and challenges culinary teams to consistently demonstrate outstanding daily upkeep, sanitation, safety, administration, management, and training while simultaneously delivering high-quality, nutritious foods that exceed customer expectations. Our culinary specialists generate readiness and support quality-of-life everyday through their exceptional dedication to our Sailors and joint warfighters.”

The galley’s staff consists of about 53 Sailors and 30 civilians who work tirelessly to serve around 400 Sailors, Marines and civilians each day.

“This distinguished award is thanks to a lot of hard work from our culinary specialists and civilians who have proven they are always ready to serve the best food in the Navy,” said Chief Warrant Officer Antonio Padilla, NBK’s food service officer. “They should all be proud of this accomplishment.”

NBK’s commanding officer, Capt. Richard Rhinehart, also congratulated the galley staff on their victorious win and expressed appreciation for their steadfast hard work.

“I really can’t thank you all enough for coming in every day to put your hearts and souls into taking care of our warfighters and giving them the best meals in the Navy,” said Rhinehart. “This is a fantastic accomplishment.”

Culinary Specialist 1st Class Jason Flynn said that winning the Ney Award is a testament to the professionalism and hard work put forth by his team every day at the galley, even while navigating struggles as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

“Winning the Ney Award means a lot because of the hard work that goes into achieving something like this,” said Flynn. “Even with all of the challenges that we have faced in the midst of a global pandemic, we still came out on top. To me, that speaks volumes to the amount of
teamwork we exercise in all aspects of the job. I couldn’t be more proud of our team.”

The Ney Award was established in 1958 by the Secretary of the Navy and the International Food Executive Association to encourage the continued improvement of food service quality in the Navy.

Naval Base Kitsap serves to support the Navy by providing reliable and timely base operating services for our ships, submarines, and shore commands in Bangor, Bremerton, Keyport and Manchester.
