SHAW AIR FORCE BASE, S.C. - The air was cool, crisp with few clouds, a perfect day to go flying. The South Carolina Flight Detachment is where you can find Chief Warrant Officer 3 Nicholas Hillhouse, Senior Instructor Pilot and Instrument Examiner, Chief Warrant Officer 3 John Rabbi, Operations Officer, and Chief Warrant Officer 4 Frank Campagna, Safety Officer. Assigned to the South Carolina Army National Guard (SCARNG), Detachment 5, 2nd - 641st Aviation Regiment.
Campagna was completing qualifying on the C-26e jet and needed passengers for this mission, fulfilling the requirements for for qualification. SCARNG invited U.S. Army Central (USARCENT) Chief Warrant Officer 5 Matthew Fitter, G32 Aviation Standardization Officer, and Chief Warrant Officer 5 William Miller, Aviation Standardization Officer, to fly on April 23rd. This both provided the needed passengers to complete the qualification, and highlighted the partnership between USARCENT and the Army National Guard.
“Most people think we only fly generals,” said Hillhouse. “If you need us just ask, we are here to support everyone's military mission, it is not based on rank.”
Not a lot of people know about the flight services the SCARNG provides for personnel, national or local. They are here to support any military mission for their Army neighbors at U.S. Army Central (USARCENT), Fort Jackson, and McEntire Joint National Guard Base.
For the flight, Hillhouse briefed about the flight (training mission), including destination, weather conditions, and what to expect during the flight. They flew in a C-26e jet, which looks similar to a private jet. It holds ten passengers with room for small carry-on luggage.
SCARNG wants you to know that if you have military transportation orders that fall through, your time and energy is important and can be saved by using military aircraft (MILAIR) transportation, where you can travel to other military installations or civilian airports.
To request MILAIR transportation from the SCARNG, download the Military Air Passenger/Cargo Request, DD Form 2768, can be accessed through the Web link, http://www.apd.army.mil/. Click on "DD Forms" and locate DD 2768, which is in PDF-fillable format. “N1Q” is their unit and required to be filled out for a flight request.
For more clarification and flight request for your next military mission you can contact CW3 Nicholas Hillhouse at 803-299-5825 or via e-mail at nicholas.r.hillhouse.mil@mail.mil.
