CAMP MURRAY, Wash.—Capt. Matthew Tasin of the 116th Air Support Operations Squadron was named the Washington Air National Guard’s Company Grade Officer of the Year during an awards ceremony in March.

Originally from Houston, Texas, Tasin received his Air Force commission on active duty. He deployed overseas as a Joint Terminal Attack Controller and also served as an instructor at the Tactical Air Control Party training school for TACP precision strike officers and technicians.

He joined the Air Guard’s 116th because “I wanted to continue being part of the TACP community and had heard great things about the morale and mission of the 116th ASOS,” he said.

Tasin said that he especially appreciates the people of the 116th. “There is an abundance of morale and camaraderie among the Huskies,” he said.

Joining the Guard allowed Tasin to participate in domestic operations for the first time in his career. He took part in the military assistance to civil disturbance mobilization in support of the Seattle Police Department in June 2020. He also took part in the Guard mobilization to Washington, DC in support of the presidential inauguration in January 2021.

One highlight of Tasin's time in the Air Guard has been working to expand and implement the 116th ASOS Assessment and Selection course for incoming TACPs, he said.

Outside of the Guard, Tasin likes to spend “quality family time” with his wife and two daughters, he said. He also keeps up a regular routine of physical training and spends a lot of time outdoors hiking, biking, and shooting. He and his family live in Orting, Washington.
