    Story by Lt. Kaila Oliver

Naval Surface and Mine Warfighting Development Center (SMWDC)

Naval Surface and Mine Warfighting Development Center (SMWDC) personnel participated in various Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month (SAAPM) events in April to increase awareness of sexual assault prevention and resources for victims.

Although SAAPM occurs annually in April, the Department of Defense (DoD) has a zero tolerance policy for sexual assault, prevention is an all-hands mission every day.

SMWDC hosted many SAAPM events to raise awareness. Those activities included the “No-more” campaign, base clean-up, denim day, and culminated with a SAAPM proclamation event held at SMWDC headquarters April 28th.

The “No-more” campaign is dedicated to ending domestic violence and sexual assault by increasing awareness, inspiring action and fueling culture change. Individuals wrote short messages that were displayed throughout the command, targeting behaviors and actions that we say “no-more” to because they do not meet the high standards of naval service.

SMWDC personnel came together and participated in the base clean-up to remove trash and debris, from the surrounding location. Participants received a teal ribbon, a symbol for sexual assault awareness and a sign of support for sexual assault survivors, and wore denim. These relatively easy tasks were a visible reminder of how doing the little things can have a big impact. Bystander intervention is very important when it comes to preventing sexual assault.

Victim Advocates can assist those who have experienced a sexual assault, and they will help victims to understand reporting options. Sexual assault can be reported 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Individuals can contact the Naval Base San Diego response line at 619-279-2904 or the DoD Safe Helpline at 877-995-5247, 24 hours a day seven days a week, for resources or to make a report of sexual assault or abuse.

Headquartered in San Diego, SMWDC has four Divisions in California and Virginia focused on integrated air and missile defense, amphibious warfare, anti-submarine warfare/surface warfare, and mine warfare.
