SAN DIEGO – Culinary Specialists from both the Ballast Point Galley and the CZ Hall at Naval Base Point Loma, participated in a cake bake off in support of raising awareness for SAAPM.
Each galley chose and executed a cake design that the teams felt best communicated the message of support and unity in the fight against sexual assault.
The cakes were judged by the Command Triad, N9 department and the food service officer, based on appearance, relevance to the topic and of course, taste.
“Our cake at The Galley at Ballast Point is in the shape and color of the SAPR Ribbon,” said Chief Culinary Specialist Jose Rosarivas, lead of the Ballast Point team. “We feel that the ribbon is the most recognized symbol of SAPR Awareness.”
Raising awareness for the victims of sexual assault is an important way to help victims through their situations and to help bring attention to these instances so that they may be avoided in the future.
“I feel that SAPR Awareness is important for our Navy to be able to grow as an organization and allow Sailors to work in a safe and professional environment,” said Rosarivas. “The message is simple, respect each other, protect our Sailors and empower and train our Sailors to recognize, prevent and report sexual assaults.”
SAAPM awareness is not just a part of the month of April, but a part of everyday in the Navy. Sailors are encouraged to look out for one another and protect one another in these situations.
The design for the CZ Hall cake was a five tear chocolate cake with a large teal ribbon made of fondant surrounded by teal colored, white chocolate hearts.
“It’s our duty create an environment to eliminate sexual assault and requiring a personal commitment from all our brothers and sisters in the armed forces to make this happen,” said Chief Culinary Specialist Johnny Stepp, lead of the CZ Hall team. “Sexual assault should never happen and we as sailors must work together to make sure it never does.”
Sailors are encouraged to speak out against sexual assault and support others than may be enduring sexual assault related hardships.
“For anyone who is tired of hearing and having to attend training about SAPR,” said Rosarivas. “All I have to say is the victims aren’t tired. It takes all of us to ensure we put a stop to sexual assault.”
After some words from the Commanding Officer, the winners were announced. SAAPM cake bake off was a tie between both galleys!
Congratulations and prize bags were given to all the winners, for their wonderful cakes with important messages against sexual assault.
