FORT BLISS, Texas – Eleven newly promoted sergeants from 647th Regional Support Group (Forward), Fort Bliss Mobilization Brigade were welcomed to the U.S. Army’s Corps of noncommissioned officers (NCOs) during a socially distanced ceremony hosted by Task Force Viper, 5th Armored Brigade, First Army Division West, April 22, 2021, at Sage Hall here.

Command Sgt. Maj. Thomas Brehmer, command sergeant major, 647th Regional Support Group (Forward), Fort Bliss Mobilization Brigade, served as the guest speaker at the event.

Brehmer said that newly inducted NCOs are on their way to becoming leaders and should exercise their role in the absence of a senior ranking leader in their units.

“The stripes on your chest are a flashing beacon that unless someone of more senior rank is present, you are now the first line leader in the chain of command,” said Brehmer.

The NCO Corps is a ‘time honored corps’ grounded in heritage, values and tradition that originated with the establishment of the Continental Army on June 14, 1775. The NCO induction ceremony is a tradition conducted to celebrate the transition of Soldier to leader as they join the ranks of the NCO Corps.

During the ceremony and part of the tradition, three candles were lit by three NCOs; red for valor of the NCO, white for purity, honesty and integrity; and blue for the field of honor.

Newly inducted Sgt. Nahhaj Jones, demobilization assistant noncommissioned officer in charge, 647th RSG (FWD), FBMB, discussed what being inducted in the NCO Corps means to him.

“Being inducted into the NCO Corps is a great honor,” Jones said. “To have the ability to shape young and new soldiers to help make a better Army overall is just an empyreal type of feeling. Truly a great honor and hope to make lasting impressions on those I come across.”

As leaders in the Army, NCOs are responsible for taking care of Soldiers, which includes development, education and training. NCOs set and maintain the standard and lead from the front.

The newly inducted sergeants accepted the NCO Charge, recited the NCO Creed, and walked under an archway symbolizing their rite of passage into the NCO Corps. They are prepared to lead from the front with competence, character and commitment.
