CAMP HENRY, Republic of Korea – “Sustainer 7, signing off the net.”
After 29 years in the U.S. Army, Command Sgt. Maj. LaDerek Green used those words to close out his time with the 19th Expeditionary Sustainment Command, where he served as the command senior enlisted leader for two and a half years.
The relinquishment of responsibility ceremony served as a culmination of Green’s 19th ESC’s service, with several senior leaders in attendance including Lt. Gen. Bill Burleson and Command Sgt. Maj. Robert Cobb; Command Sgt. Maj. Walter Tagalicud, command sergeant major, United States Forces Korea; and members of the 19th ESC Korean Advisory Council representing the surrounding community of Daegu.
While he is known as a skilled sustainment leader and passionate about physical fitness, Green’s legacy at 19th ESC may have been how he helped cultivate a culture focused on putting people first. Green worked to develop a talent management program within 19th ESC to ensure the Soldiers were positioned for success, and spearheaded a new barracks management program to improve safety and morale.
“The people in our organization will forever be better for the time they have shared with you,” said Brig. Gen. Steven Allen, commander, 19th ESC. “You inspire all Soldiers to do their very best and balance Soldier needs with daily mission.”
Green’s time with 19th ESC coincided with the breakout of the COVID-19 pandemic in Daegu, which suffered from an outbreak of the virus before it spread to other continents. The actions of 19th ESC together with allies within Daegu and 2nd Operational Command, Republic of Korea Army, led to prevention measures that helped minimize the virus’ spread locally.
Green was closely involved with these prevention efforts, which were soon adopted by other commands.
“The mitigation measures adopted by 19th ESC went on to be the gold standard throughout the Army and contributed immensely to the reduced number of cases throughout the Korean peninsula,” said Allen.
Green’s passionate motivational speeches were a constant presence throughout his tenure at 19th ESC, and he continued to push his teammates to greater heights during the final words of his speech.
“Team 19 it was truly an honor serving such courageous Soldiers and families as you,” said Green. “Your steadfast commitment to ensure the ROK-US alliance remains ironclad embodies our two nations, one team and Every Soldier Counts motto.”
