SAN DIEGO – Four international officers from Indonesia and the Philippines visited amphibious assault ship USS Tripoli (LHA 7) as part of an amphibious planning course at Expeditionary Warfare Training Group Pacific (EWTGPAC), May 6.
The officers toured Tripoli see how the Navy’s newest amphibious assault ship operates, directly augmenting their amphibious warfare and humanitarian-focused course curriculum.
“The tour definitely reinforces and adds to everybody’s collective learning about the capabilities and limitations of each ship,” said Lt. Alexander Hoersten, an instructor at EWTGPAC’s International Senior Officer Amphibious Planning Course. “I think our international partners can better understand how we can onload and embark a large Marine force to take overseas.”
Hosting foreign officers aboard military ships strengthens U.S. international alliances by developing a mutual operating mindset that allows for more dynamic joint exercises.
“It is important to build partnerships with our partners and allies all over world,” said Hoersten. “This definitely builds camaraderie and a common understanding of some of the doctrine and warfare practices that we fight as the U.S. Navy. We can share these and work together in the future.”
The Amphibious Planning Course at EWTGPAC is an in-depth, multi-week course designed to show international partners and allies how the U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps plan and execute amphibious operations.
Tripoli is the Navy’s newest America-class amphibious assault ship homeported in San Diego. The ship is assigned to Amphibious Squadron 7.
