Becoming the Marine of the quarter for the U.S. Marine Corps is an achievement only few lower enlisted Marines have attained. This honor is to recognize enlisted Marines, lance corporal and below, who have demonstrated exceptional performance of duty. Recently meritoriously promoted Cpl. Matheus Stitt is now one of those few who have achieved this title. Born and raised in the country of Brazil, Stitt came to America and joined the Marine Corps in 2019.
“In my senior year, I told my dad I did not know what I wanted to do,” Stitt said. “He was in the Marine Corps from 84 to until 88 or 89, so while I grew up he was always talking about his time in the Marine Corps and was always very adamant about it.”
Joining the Marine Corps through a recruiting station in Texas, Stitt originally pursued a military occupation specialty in the intelligence field. Unfortunately, due to his dual citizenship he could not qualify, the silver lining is this led Stitt to the air traffic control (ATC) field.
“I was always fascinated with aviation and everything of that aspect,” Stitt said. “I asked myself, what would I be working more closely towards, and the aviation field sets me up for a lifetime after the Marine Corps whether I decide to stay in or not.”
Stitt’s time in the Marine Corps has not been without challenge. With his family in another country, it is difficult to visit them as often as others. He still credits them as some of his biggest supporters. To combat this struggle, Stitt has found family within the ATC personnel.
“Stitt has impeccable integrity, a passion for improvement, and his resiliency make him one of the upmost professional Marines here at ATC,” said Master Sgt. Michael A. Nelson the staff non-commissioned officer in Charge of ATC.
Looking towards the future Stitt is uncertain what may happen. Whether that is to continue his Marine Corps career or pursue a civilian career in aviation. One thing is certain after achieving Marine of the quarter.
“I want to explore the world. I fell in love with the MOS itself, it is a dream job. This sets a higher expectation to how I conduct myself, how I present myself to others, to the junior Marines, and how I can live up to the name Marine of the quarter.”
