Rear Adm. John F. Meier, Commander, Naval Air Force Atlantic, visited the aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74), at Newport News Shipyard, May 14.

Meier visited the ship in order to congratulate the crew on a successful transit and docking, and to observe and discuss current Refueling and Complex Overhaul (RCOH) projects. He toured the ship with Capt. Cassidy Norman, Commanding Officer, USS John C. Stennis, and various leaders from the ship.

“This is a fantastic opportunity to demonstrate how John C. Stennis will deliver this ship back in better materiel condition than she arrived, and how we will deliver 25 additional years of service to our nation and our Navy,” Meier said. “Thank you for your great work, and for the opportunity to see all of you today."

The overhaul of the ship is a combined effort between the ship’s crew, Newport News Shipbuilding and other contractors. Their collective work will prepare the ship for the second half of its 50-year service life.

RCOH accounts for approximately 35 percent of all depot-level maintenance in the ship’s life. This maintenance period was created to recapitalize the nation’s aircraft carriers and quickly get them back in the fight. RCOH extends the life of one of the nation’s most strategically critical national assets.

Stennis is the seventh Nimitz-class aircraft carrier to undergo an RCOH. The completion of RCOH will ensure the enduring mission of USS John C. Stennis to project U.S. national power, in all domains, in peacetime and in war, anywhere in the world.
