DOVER AIR FORCE BASE, Del. -- The 436th Security Forces Squadron Combat Arms Training and Maintenance firing range reopened May 12, 2021.
After originally closing down in June 2020 for extended range inspection and improvements, it is now open for full operating use.
According to Tech. Sgt. Justin Block, 436th SFS CATM instructor, many squadrons played a key in reopening the range.
Support teams for the inspection included the 436th Medical Group bioenvironmental engineering flight, 436th Civil Engineer Squadron, and both 436th and 512th Airlift Wing safety teams.
Structural work was completed by members of the 436th CES, while bioenvironmental engineering conducted environmental assessments. Finally, the safety offices worked together to update risk assessment codes for the entire facility.
Reopening the range not only gives Airmen a place to qualify on weapons, but also directly impacts deployment readiness.
“If the personnel deploying do not get weapons qualified, it [causes] the mission in different combatant commands and major commands to fail,” said Tech. Sgt. Joseph Haller, 436th SFS noncommissioned officer in charge of CATM. “All of their base’s defenses would be placed in jeopardy.”
