Evans Army Community Hospital (EACH) hosted a groundbreaking ceremony to mark construction of the Intrepid Spirit Center (ISC) at Fort Carson, Colorado, May 13.

The $13-million facility will serve as Fort Carson’s dedicated center to diagnose and treat traumatic brain injury and post-traumatic stress in regional active duty service members.

“With so many suffering from TBI, we need to do more,” said David Winters, president, Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund (IFHF). “We want to make treatment more easily available to service members.”

The Fort Carson ISC will be the ninth facility constructed for service members thanks to the IFHF’s continued fundraising efforts.

“Your generosity does not go unnoticed and this great gift will bask under the shadows of Cheyenne Mountain for years to come and serve as a reminder of the dedication of the American people to its veterans,” said Maj. Gen. Matthew W. McFarlane, commanding general, 4th Infantry Division and Fort Carson. “This will yield innumerable dividends for our force as we continue to prepare to fight and win our nation’s wars.”

Upon completion, the 25,000-square-foot facility will house the Warrior Recovery Center (WRC) team, which currently provides TBI treatment on the EACH campus for service members throughout the Pikes Peak region.

“This new center will be a critical addition to our health care system, providing a much needed capability to our service members suffering from PTSD, TBI and other associated health conditions,” said Col. Kevin R. Bass, EACH commander and Colorado Military Health System director. “It will provide a central location where service members can receive comprehensive treatment for their invisible wounds.”

As part of the National Intrepid Center of Excellence at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, this center will serve as a satellite for research, diagnosis and treatment.

“Over the past decade, this network has worked closely together to improve the healthcare provided for TBI among the military population,” said U.S. Public Health Service Capt. Alicia Souvignier, WRC director. “We successfully run an intensive outpatient program and also provide robust individualized care.”

The patient-focused WRC also employs music and art therapy to guide service members on their recovery journey.

“Hope is what the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund is providing with the gift of this building,” said Souvignier. “Hope for the injured service members, their family and friends, and for the staff caring for these service members.”
