NASHVILLE, Tenn. – For more than a year, Soldiers and Airmen with the Tennessee National Guard have been on the front lines for the fight against COVID-19. Supporting the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency and Tennessee’s Department of Health, more than 1,000 Guardsmen have been serving throughout the state since March 2020. They have been helping high-risk communities, long-term care facilities, and hospitals while also supporting COVID-19 testing and vaccination sites.
One Soldier that has been helping since the pandemic started is Sgt. Finis Dailey with Nashville’s 118th Mobile Public Affairs Detachment. A Nashville native and former Marine, Dailey was one of the first Soldiers called to serve.
“I was a legal administrative specialist for the Department of Veteran’s Affairs in Nashville and just finished military training at Fort Meade, Maryland, when I got called to help,” said Dailey. “I was excited for the chance to be a part of the effort helping our state and to be able to use my VA experience as well as my military training.”
On March 26, 2020, when Gov. Bill Lee and Maj. Gen. Jeff Holmes, Tennessee’s Adjutant General, announced that Guardsmen were assigned to help fight COVID-19 at Smyrna’s Volunteer Training Site, Dailey was one of the 250 Guardsmen in attendance.
“The response was very quick,” said Dailey. “We were notified, trained, and began working in less than a week.”
Dailey’s first assignment was to be a military administrative staff member in Smyrna where he synchronized schedules, tracked testing, and helped coordinate operations throughout Middle Tennessee. After a few months, he transferred to Chattanooga where he worked with several nearby counties ensuring local medical staff members were getting the support they needed from the National Guard.
In April 2021, Dailey transferred to Cookeville and continued as a liaison between the Tennessee National Guard and supported agencies. He ensured that operations ran smoothly and Tennesseans received the best care and support possible.
“It’s been a privilege to be a part of helping everyone throughout the pandemic,” said Dailey. “Being able to help my state and neighbors is why I decided to join the Tennessee National Guard.”
