Once again, congratulations are in order for a Fort Jackson Soldier.
Staff Sgt. Cody Mackall, a drill sergeant with Company A, 4th Battalion, 39th Infantry Regiment, has been selected to be the Department of the Army's Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers representative.
Mackall still remembers being a BOSS representative as a private. “I think I was PV2 Mackall back at Fort Lewis, Washington, when they said, ‘you’re going to be the BOSS rep.’”
“Next week will be 10 years in the Army. If you had told me eight years ago, you’re a company rep now but in eight years you’re going to be the (Department of the Army) BOSS guy, I’d say yeah right, you’re crazy, I still don’t know what I’m doing."
Mackall is scheduled to report to his new position in San Antonio in the fall, replacing the current BOSS representative, Staff Sgt. Adrian Mooney.
To even be considered for the IMCOM G9 position, applicants must be nominated by their command sergeant major, have several letters of recommendation, as well as submit their evaluations and record brief. Candidates must also have already been involved with a garrison or higher BOSS program, among other requirements. Mackall was one of seven individuals to interview with the selection panel.
Mackall said his friends and previous leaders know the passion he has for the program and the battles he has had to overcome.
“The passion that I have for this program, you can’t put it into words,” Mackall said.
Fort Jackson Garrison Command Sgt. Maj. Algrish Williams said Mackall’s passion can be seen in his hard work and dedication to the program.
“Staff Sgt. Mackall has proven his commitment while serving Fort Jackson over the last several years. He is by far one of the hardest working members on my BOSS team. He dedicates his very best into everything he does and goes far beyond any requirements while serving in the demanding role of a drill sergeant,” Williams said.
In his new position, Mackall will be helping with the planning, directing and implementation of BOSS activities and events, as well as promoting the program. He’ll also be training BOSS presidents, and providing mentorship for new BOSS representatives.
“The Army made a great choice with him, he will enhance our BOSS program and aid in enhancing the enterprise … his selection is certainly a win for Fort Jackson, U.S. Army Garrison and the 165th Infantry Brigade. I am truly proud to see our own warrior selected to represent us at the Department of the Army level.”
